George TONGUE was a convict assigned to the Newcastle district. After marriage, he had eight children, all of whom remained in the area to marry and raise families. The name can be difficult to research with many alternate spellings found to date including TONGE, TOUNGE, FONGUE, YOUNG, TUNGE and TONNY.

George Tongue was born in Nottingham, England about 1809-1813. On 29 June 1831. George was convicted at the Nottingham Quarter Sessions for stealing 65 yards of riband [ribbon]. George was described as a labourer of St Mary. His sentence was to be transported for 14 years.

He was one of 200 convicts transported on the ‘Surrey [5]’ which arrived in the Colony with George on board in late 1831. The indents for this ship show that George was aged 18 and his native place was Mansfield. In these his occupation is listed as Groom and he had a previous conviction of 6 months. On arrival he was assigned to Colonel SNODGRASS in Sydney.

By 1837, George was living in Raymond Terrace assigned to K W Snodgrass. He received his Ticket of Leave in 1839.

Two years later, George’s brother, Benjamin Tongue Jnr, arrived in Sydney on 26 October 1839 aboard the Florist.

George married Jane Fosterat Christ Church Newcastle on 12 September 1853. Jane was born circa 1824 in East Sussex, England the daughter of Benjamin Foster and, Hannah Steath (1783-1858 Shepherds Paddock, Sydney (Redfern), the son of Benjamin Foster, born 1757 Volimore, Sussex, died January 1839 and Jane Ockenden born 1760).

The couple settled on Mosquito Island where they lived for the rest of their lives. Jane Tongue died in 1886 and was buried in Waratah Cemetery. George died in 1896 and was buried at Stockton Cemetery.

George and Jane Tongue’s children were:-

1. Ann Tongue, born 1842 and died in 1880 at Raymond Terrace. Married John Sutherland Sandeman in 1866 and had 8 children.

2. Hannah Tongue, born 1847 and died about 1929. Married [1] William Henry Rinker in 1866 and had 6 children. William died in 1882 and Hannah married [2] Thomas Carter. They had 3 children.

3. Sarah Tongue, born in 1849 and died at Stockton in 1927. Sarah is buried in Stockton Cemetery. Married John Brown at Christ Church Newcastle in 1868 and they had 12 children. The family lived in Balmain [Sydney] and Newcastle. John was a Master Mariner.

4. Ellen Tongue, born in 1851 and died in 1942 at Stockton. She married Stockton’s Thomas Beatson Warland in 1873. They had 8 children together.

5. William Tongue, born in 1853 and died at Stockton in 1925. He married Sarah Ann Paile in 1884. Sarah Ann died in 1914. They are both buried in Stockton Cemetery. William and Sarah had 8 children.

6. Clarence Tongue, born in Newcastle in 1856 and died in 1929. Clarence married Ann Canty in 1883. In 1904 Clarence was living on Mosquito Island running a dairy C & F Tongue Bros.

Thomas Beatson Warland

Frederick Charles Warland born 1884, died 1966 – parents unknown. He married Gertrude Ellen (born 1886) Fox in 1909 at Stockton. She died in 1946.

Children: George F Warland born 1910 Stockton, died 1910 Stockton Thomas Beatson Warland born 1912 Stockton, died 1969 Stockton. Florence I Warland born 1916 Stockton Gertrude Ellen Warland born 1922 Stockton.

Thomas Beatson had children including Alice Warland born 1882 in Newcastle. Alice married Thomas J Brady in 1906 at Newcastle, reference no. 7744. They lived at Stockton after marriage and there raised 12 children, all born Stockton who attended St Peter’s Catholic School, including Marj Brady born 16 June 1921. In a letter to the Historical Society from her home at 109A Harbourside Haven, Government Road Shoal Bay, in 2006 she advised she had married a gentleman by the name of Richmond.
